Lisbon has a rich maritime heritage and tradition of excellence not only in navigation but also in ship building and ship repair. Lisbon is older than Rome. And according to most estimates, around 4 centuries older. It is in fact the second oldest European capital after Athens, many historians believing that it was settled by the Phoenicians around 1200 B.C., who used the excellent transport possibilities offered by the River Tagus.
